Wheelchair Van Giveaway Contest

Three wheelchair accessible vans will be given away this May as part of the second annual National Mobility Awareness Month contest. The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is sponsoring the event, with the participation of local dealers like
Bussani Mobility Team
all across North America.
Mobility Awareness Month
“We’re delighted to continue this important movement after a successful inaugural year,” said Dave Hubbard, executive director and CEO of NMEDA. “Last year, we welcomed more than 1,700 entries, had 1.2 million votes cast, and delivered wheelchair accessible vans to three amazing families. We remain humbled by the response and look forward to creating life changing experiences in the lives of this year’s winners.”
Daniel Bussani, Vice President at Bussani Mobility Team, said: “Over 18 million people in the U.S. have mobility issues. But so many aren’t aware of the adaptive driving options that are available today to help them live an active and mobile lifestyle. The National Mobility Awareness Month contest helps to spread the word, raising awareness among the general population about how adaptive vehicles can change peoples’ lives and give them new hope to live out their dreams.”
The search is now on for three “local heroes” in the U.S. and Canada who have a story to tell about how they are triumphing over their mobility issues through their academic and career ambitions, as well as their family and local community contributions. Entries are being accepted and voting is open through May 10, 2013 at

. Each mobility dealer has a code and when participants include this code in their entry they get extra votes (#4PVE8 represents Bussani Mobility Team).
During the last week of May, the three people with the most inspiring stories will be awarded their fantastic new wheelchair accessible vehicles. Sponsors Chrysler and Toyota have rallied together to provide the vehicles, which will be customized by NMEDA manufacturers – the Braun Corporation, Vantage Mobility International (VMI) and Bruno Independent Living Aids.

All About Adaptive Sports at Bussani Mobility

We wanted to share a few tidbits with you from the
Bussani Mobility
March 13th New York Mobility Club meeting, which was all about Adaptive Sports.
Adaptive Sports at Bussani Mobility
Tony Fitzgerald (a paralympian and 3-sport athlete who currently plays for the NY rangers and Long Island Roughriders sled hockey teams) shared his insights into how sports can have a curative effect. He said: “Wheelchair sports are not just sports, they’re therapy. Everybody can find a sport that they can customize, adapt, or improvise. You can do amazing things.”

In taking questions from the group, he got into the nitty gritty of how things work. One participant said he doesn’t have the hand strength to grip a hockey stick. And Tony responded, “You don’t need it. You’d be amazed at what a little duct tape can do.” He explained that you can tape the sticks to your hands, get into the sled, and you’re good to go! His stories and can-do attitude were very inspiring!

The amazing Peter Hawkins was also there and shared: “I don’t live my life from the perspective that I’m in a wheelchair and how can I do that. I live from the perspective of I want to do that, and I go do it. If you believe in yourself and you work at it, you can do just about anything.”
Thanks to our speakers. And thanks to all of our New York Mobility Club participants. This is all about you, and you make it all worthwhile.

And congrats to Freyda Kolinsky, who won the raffle prize of two center ice wheelchair seats to a NY Islanders game, courtesy of Tony!
We also wanted to let you know that, based on feedback from this month’s New York Mobility Club meeting, we’re in the process of creating an information resource of local adaptive sports opportunities, which we’ll expect to have ready for you in the Spring.
